My honest thoughts on the current state of AI

In a state of the world where most big companies are moving towards more and more features powered by AI, the fact that we have no widely adopted open standard for the restriction and balance of such features scares me.

oh boy. AI, where do I even begin. AI as a whole has been on the tech industries mind for a few years now, only really gaining traction around the time of the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT. (I am sure none of you need an introduction to what ChatGPT is) After the initial AI boom of November 2022, more and more tech companies have been experimenting with adding AI powered features into their software/apps.

Lack of an open standard

There are more than a few problems that I personally have with this. The first outstanding issue I have with this being the rapid growth of neural networks and the lack of an open standard. There's currently no concrete laws surrounding the use of AI generated content, so a lot of immoral things have already happened, the biggest example of this being the recent Taylor Swift AI generated porn debacle. In most places at the time, generating AI pornography of other people against their will wasn't really considered illegal. (Granted things have got better and countries are finally starting to develop stricter policies for this kind of stuff). if AI's growth and popularity had been monitored properly from the beginning by an open standard, then maybe things like this could have been avoided. As of writing this blog post the best attempt I have seen at regulating AI is the European Unions AI Act

Neural Network Training

Another major issue with neural networks is how they are being trained, there have been countless attempted and even successful lawsuits against companies that have been training their neural networks on information that they don't necessarily own. The biggest example of this being AI generated artwork. That art had to be trained off of something, something that the organization probably does not own. More and more independent artists and content creators are making their voices heard against the training of large Neural Networks using content they have produced and are seeking compensation for their work. Even as recently as a few days ago as of writing this blog post, people are still pushing for OpenAI to give compensation to the original creators of content it's trained neural networks on. I even asked one of my artist friends how they feel about AI art and they said this:

“It’s so shitty how you can just for free generate anything, it takes away jobs from real artist who put time and effort into the art they make, but why would you pay for it if you can just generate it for free? The only real way for artist to sell art would be traditional art, and only really paintings sell for a lot, which ups the price for artists and consumers with how much it all costs. it’s so much easier for digital artists to sell art when they can make it for free as long as they have a device instead of spending a lot on paint, canvases, and brushes. as well as most “good” paintings come from oil paint which costs a LOT and would most would need varnish to finish it, which makes it so much more expensive. It also doesn’t do well for those who’s art AI was train off. more unique can still be differentiated from AI but when your art is what the AI was trained off it makes so much to sell and make a living for yourself. Over all AI art is a dumb fucking cheapskate way to stop paying artists who need that money to live to boost the small ego of the dumb cunts who developed it. I fucking hate AI art and I really hope you do too.”

Some other thoughts

Don't get me wrong, AI is truly an amazing technology, i just think that it needs to be regulated properly. But also, AI isn't necessarily anything brand new. People have been using AI generated content or tools in their daily lives for years, whether that be a websites support chat-bot or more advanced machine learning tools like NVIDIA's DLSS.

Conclusion

To summarize, I'm not happy with where the AI industry is at the moment, I'm not happy with the widespread usage of it and what its being used for and I want change before I consider integrating any AI products/apps into my daily workflow.

Unrelated little note

Hey! hey you! Thank you for reading my blog!! This is a first for me as I've never really done anything too public facing before. As this is my first proper blog clearly I still have a lot to learn. There will probably be grammatical errors, Misspellings and odd looking sections riddled throughout the page, so I'll probably come back and edit this page a bit.
